Vertical stream layouts that actually work on a phone

Most vertical stream layouts are horizontal layouts squeezed until they fit. They look fine in the OBS preview and terrible on an actual phone.

Here's what holds up at phone scale. These are the rules SceneFlip's auto-layout follows, explained, so you can apply them by hand too (or break them on purpose, which is also fine if you know what you're trading).

The phone UI owns the edges

On Twitch mobile your video renders full screen, and then Twitch draws its own interface on top. Title and status take roughly the top 180px. Chat and the input box take the bottom 320px or so. The action buttons live along the right edge.

That's close to a third of a 1080x1920 frame that is visible but contested. Backgrounds can run edge to edge. Information can't. Your face, the game, a donation goal: keep them inside the middle ~1400px.

Face top, content middle

Phone viewers hold the screen close and they look at faces first. The arrangement that keeps winning is simple. Facecam in the top zone, below the status band. Content full width in the middle, keeping its native 16:9 shape.

A 16:9 game feed on a 9:16 canvas comes out to 1080x607. That sounds small. On an actual phone at reading distance it's plenty, and it beats a stretched or blind-cropped feed every time. If your game has HUD in the corners, keeping the full 16:9 frame is also the only way to keep all of it on screen.

One exception. Content that's genuinely vertical-friendly, like an IRL camera or a portrait game, should fill the frame edge to edge. Cropping the sides off a 16:9 source is the right call when the middle of the image is all that matters. That's a judgment call about your specific content, which is exactly why SceneFlip letterboxes by default and tells you what it did instead of guessing silently.

Kill the burned-in chat

Twitch mobile overlays live chat on vertical streams natively. A chat box baked into your canvas means phone viewers see chat twice, and one of them looks stale. Hide it on the vertical canvas.

Desktop viewers still see your styled chat on the horizontal feed. The two formats are independent, which is the whole point of dual format.

Alerts go over the content

On horizontal layouts alerts pop over the gameplay. Vertical is no different: top third of the content area, roughly full width, where the eye already is. Don't build a dedicated alert row. Dead space between camera and content reads as a mistake at phone scale.

Your 16:9 overlay art won't survive the trip

Top bars, side panels, themed frames. Decorative art composed for 16:9 has no vertical equivalent, and cropping it to 9:16 usually mangles it. You have two honest options: hide it on vertical (a clean camera-plus-game layout looks better than mangled art), or buy vertical-native art, which several overlay shops now sell.

Text sources are fine. Resize and center them. Compact widgets like goals and timers work too, in the middle band, away from the edges.

Check it on an actual phone

Preview panes lie about scale. Before going live for real, run a private test stream and look at it on your own phone at arm's length. If you can't read it there, nobody else can either. Ten seconds of checking saves a whole night of streaming a layout nobody could parse.
